If you never had a learning or physical disability or a mental illness, it is difficult to truly understand what some of your students are going through and the toll that has on their mental well being. As a teacher, it can be frustrating working with students that do not understand the material. However, you are much more likely to be patient and understanding if you are placed in the students’ shoes and feel how a student with a disability feels. Each person present will complete hands on activities that will simulate what having a disability is like first hand. I will also share videos made by former students as well as ACL colleagues who are willing to share how frustrating and difficult it is to deal with the issues they face as a student or adult with a disability or mental illness.
