Much of the Cambridge Latin Course is set in Roman Britain during the 80s AD. The character of Quintus, after leaving Pompeii and spending time in Alexandria, travels to Britain and visits the territory of the Regnenses (Salvius’ villa and Fishbourne palace), Aquae Sulis (Bath) and Deva (Chester). This presentation will situate the storyline in its physical context by investigating its settings, and will consider ways in which understanding of relevant archaeological sites, reconstructions, and history can enhance our teaching of Units 2 and 3 of the CLC. In addition, this presentation will consider how learners can, by following Quintus’ story, become familiar with many different aspects of this unique part of the Roman Empire, such as its inhabitants, landscape and political organisation, and with how its conquerors were seeking to make it their own through the processes of Romanization.
